Custodial history: The collection was assembled over time in the SLPL stacks and then transferred to Special Collections.
The second accession of 88 issues was donated by Frank Absher, St. Louis Media History Foundation.
The third accession of over 100 issues was transferred from the Philip Hasser Photo Collection in the fall of 2015.
The fourth accession of 3 issues was donated by Rick Stoff on December 15, 2015.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of Prom magazine which was published monthly by Miller Publications from March 1947 to 1973. The aim of this collection is to assemble a full run of Prom, which was produced “exclusively for the youth of Greater St. Louis.” Special Collections currently has an incomplete run from March 1947 to July 1973.

Could the question come from reading a local teen magazine? Prom Magazine, published monthly from 1947-1973, represented all the high schools – public and private - of the St. Louis area. Not only did it publish photos of proms and dances; it featured events going on in the schools, gave sports reports, fashion trends, interviews with celebrities that were passing through town. Prom reporters, writers represented from each school, would have articles published on what events were going on at their school. […]

Reading these magazines would keep you up on the latest trends of other schools. […] "Where did you go to high school"? it's a great icebreaker to start a conversation with someone you just met and get the scoop of what's going on across town. -- St. Louis Public Library staff

Restrictions: Collection open for research. Copyrighted. Permission required to reproduce images.  
Remarks:

This is an incomplete collection. Some fragile items. Nine issues were published in 1947 and the month of June was omitted.

Bound copies of volume 1 (March 1947) through volume 23 (Dec. 1969) are in the St. Louis Room.
