Remember, if you have not yet registered, there are two ways to participate in 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten:
- You can visit a Library location to receive a paper log. Staff will take your information and provide you with a booklet to keep track of all the books your child reads.
- Or sign up on Beanstack to track books online, the Library’s online reading platform. Just create an account and log books as your child completes them. You can even download the Beanstack app to log books by scanning their barcode with your phone!
Literacy at Home
As a caretaker, you know that your child looks up to you and wants to do everything that you do. Because of this, you want to be the very best role model that you can be: you teach your child to look both ways before crossing the street, how to say “please” and “thank you”, to eat all their vegetables, and that sharing is caring. But did you know that it’s also important to teach your child good reading habits?
According to the National Literacy Trust “more than half (52.9%) of children and young people who had a role model agreed that seeing their role model read would make them think it's okay to read” and “3 in 10 (30.4%) children and young people agreed that seeing their role model read would make them think that reading is cool.”
Don’t know where to start? Here are some great ideas from Scholastic:
- Always be reading - Reading doesn’t always have to come from a book or magazine, you can also point out words on road signs while in the car/on the bus, or on labels at the store.
- Talk about what you’re reading - At meals, on car rides, mention what you’re reading, share fun facts you might have learned, or a part that you really liked. Show your child that you’re excited about reading.
- Bring reading material with you wherever you go - By bringing along something to read for both you and your child, you can turn any bit of downtime into a reading experience.
- Borrow books together - When going to the library to pick up books for your child, make sure to pick up a couple for yourself.
- Read for leisure - Carve out a little bit of time to read for yourself, show that reading can be the best part of your day.
